It has been ages since I posted here to the blog, mainly because Facebook and Instagram are so much easier to use.
But it seems a good number of folks keep swinging by to check out Three Mutts Customs so here are a few pics to show what we’ve been up to lately. Of course hand tooled fender bibs, tank bibs and custom bags are still our specialty but now we’re matching to the popular seats more closely.  Mustang distressed brown material is in stock, a new relationship with LePera allows us access to ALL of their materials and Corbin matching material is possible now too!

Custom embroidery in house! An inexpensive way to apply full color designs to your custom bib.

Brown tank bibs material matched to Mustang seats, both in plain and diamond stitch!

More Chaos Pebbles with the new full body and Split Lane designs!

And for those that want to go full tilt for a full custom, there are always hand tooled & airbrushed possibilities.

Two new full color custom fender bibs to show off…

Here are the two big projects I was working on the last week, at the same time.
The left one is a play on the Hear no Evil, See no Evil theme. Artist unknown but they did a killer pencil drawing to work off of.It was all black and white so the colors and shadows were done to go with the bike, a blue Harley-Davidson Softail Deuce.
Fully hand tooled and airbrushed using Golden Fluid and High Flow acrylics with an Iwata Eclipse CP-HS.

The right one is a reproduction of an Elvgren 1960s era bedtime pin-up.
This custom rear fender bib was made for a 2013 Harley Softail Heritage, a third bib for one of my leather addicted clients.
This one was a bit tougher as the original was an oil painting and I used air brushed acrylics making matches and blends in the colors a bit tougher to reproduce.

So I have decided to put my money where my mouth is. Starting today I will be carrying Pecard Motorcycle Leather Dressing and Kiwi Horsehair brushes for purchase. I talk about them here and Facebook/Instagram but then send folks elsewhere to buy it…not anymore. I’m also going to offer them at the same price as Pecard, no unnecessary gouging here.

Prices will be $4.00 for a 2.5 oz jar of Pecard Motorycle Leather Dressing and $6 for a Kiwi Horsehair Brush.  Shipping for one or both is $5.25 via Priority Mail (USA/APO addresses).
Order them with your custom leather job and they’ll be included in the same box to save on shipping.

The new website should be online later this month with the new products. In the meantime drop me an email at chris@threemuttscustoms.com to order or request it with a custom leather job.

Axis Nightmare flying Lo…Fatboy Lo

A client asked about a unique fender bib for his Harley Fatboy Lo.  He was looking for a bib to highlight the World War II bomber “Axis Nightmare” that his bike is themed after.
After collecting pics of each and discussing the options, a hand tooled and hand colored fender bib was the best fit.  His oil tank also sports the nose art from the plane.

Here are some pics of the fender bib all finished and installed, I’m kind of jealous of both the bike and the Mustang he gets to cruise around with!

Doing it right in Switzerland…Custom Harley Softail Slim

A recurring client and now friend of mine in Switzerland came to me originally early this year for a custom leather tank bib to match his custom seat from a shop in New York.
This seat is something I had never seen before but I quickly recognized the color as saddle tan, a common color in horse saddles.  By itself, the seat looked lonely, a bit out of place with it’s bright golden tan color on a black bike.  We discussed the bib some and he decided to stick with the same shape as the factory bib but wanted his highly detailed family emblem on it.  Using a combination of laser engraving and hand tooling, I was able to recreate it in exacting detail, including the text on the banner.  Thick, white hand stitched edges were required to match the seat so I set to work.  Together they looked great but the backend needed something so Umberto sent another email, asking about a custom roll style bag to fit between his custom seat and custom fender.  I have to wonder how many parts on his Softail Slim are factory besides the engine and frame.  We agreed on a smallish, 4″ diameter x 10″ long back that would strap to the frame between the two parts with the buckles reversed so they wouldn’t touch the fender when the bag was opened.  His racing number was hand tooled on the flap and the crest laser engraved on the side caps to tie it all together.  Here are the pics, enjoy!

a custom leather project for…me!

Posted in custom chair, custom seat, leather, Leatherwork, upholstery with tags , , on July 5, 2015 by Chris Wright

I have had this chair about as long as Jen and I have been together. It’s starting to show it’s gray as much as I am. The ‘real leather’ is peeling off it’s lamented base leaving flakes everywhere so rather than toss it and get a new one, what’s a leatherworker to do? Start wrapping it in actual real leather!

Arms done so far, 2/3oz red lambskin. Base will be black pebble grain cowhide for strength and back will be black pebble grain cowhide with a red lambskin center stripe when done.

Will probably take me a bit in between other projects but should be slick (and less messy) when done.
