It has been ages since I posted here to the blog, mainly because Facebook and Instagram are so much easier to use.
But it seems a good number of folks keep swinging by to check out Three Mutts Customs so here are a few pics to show what we’ve been up to lately. Of course hand tooled fender bibs, tank bibs and custom bags are still our specialty but now we’re matching to the popular seats more closely.  Mustang distressed brown material is in stock, a new relationship with LePera allows us access to ALL of their materials and Corbin matching material is possible now too!

Custom embroidery in house! An inexpensive way to apply full color designs to your custom bib.

Brown tank bibs material matched to Mustang seats, both in plain and diamond stitch!

More Chaos Pebbles with the new full body and Split Lane designs!

And for those that want to go full tilt for a full custom, there are always hand tooled & airbrushed possibilities.

Three Different Tank bibs for Harley Softail Slims!

Posted in airbrushing, antique, Fender bibs, hand tooled, Handlebar bag, Harley Softail, Laser Engraving, Leatherwork, Motorcycles, Slim, Softail, Tank bib, tank panel, Tooled Leather with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on September 15, 2015 by Chris Wright

I noticed folks searching for tank bibs for the Harley Softail Slim lately so I thought I would put together a post to show the three different designs I have for the Slim.
As Slim owners will already know, the factory tank bib is narrow and tapers from the dash point to the tank cut out and then folds over the frame backbone. What you may not know is the Softail Heritage tank bib is the exact same.  This means you can use the wider 5″ wide Heritage tank bib as well.

But, some folks might not appreciate the straight sides of the Heritage bib but would like a bit more room for a hand tooled or laser engraved design.  So, to address those clients I designed a hybrid Softail Slim tank bib called the teardrop.  It has the wide shoulders of the Heritage bib while maintaining the taper and tank channel wrap of the factory bib.  More room for artwork on your leather tank bib while keeping the factory lines intact.  Here are a few pictures to check out, any of the three designs start at $60 plus shipping for standard stitched edges.  Lacing, artwork and other add-ons are extra, drop me a line for an estimate: chris@threemuttscustoms.com

I also make a full compliment of rear fender bibs and tool/roll bags for your Softail Slim to create a matching set of custom leather!

Hey folks, I’ve been working on a number of big jobs lately so the posts are fewer and farther between.  I’ve just never felt the blog was the place for in process stuff so i started a new Instagram account for in process pics and quick posts and will reserve the blog for finished items, rally info and such.  For those of you that subscribe though, I thought I would share a few of the long term toolings that I’ve been working on to keep you in the loop.  If you have Instagram, check me out there by searching for #threemuttscustoms.  Enjoy the pics!

Coordinating and matching motorcycle leathers

Hey folks, Happy St. Patty’s Day!

I wanted to touch on matching and coordinating custom tank and fender bibs with your existing theme, color scheme or factory gear.  Now, having your gear match isn’t a necessity especially if function is your goal but if you are looking for a clean look to show off at Bike Night and such, coordination can make or break your look.

There are a ton of materials out there but in general there are a fixed number of suppliers so getting a good match or a close match for a tank bib or fender bib is usually possible.  Bigger companies like Harley will subcontract their materials so they are exclusive but close alternatives can be had if you know where to look. Matching another custom maker is also possible when good pictures and references are provided.

This post is picture heavy but I wanted to give you good folks some inspiration for your own matched sets and to show what is possible. None of these bikes were local so everything was done via pictures, emails and most importantly…good communication!

Enjoy!

New! Black Antique dye process

Posted in antique, black, custom work, Fender bibs, Motorcycles, New Items, Tank bib, tank panel, Tooled Leather with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on March 10, 2014 by Chris Wright

I’ve been working out the details on a new coloring process called “Black Antique” to help highlight darker bibs with extensive tooling.  The product isn’t new but the way I use it is and it took a bit o playing around to figure out how to do it right.  Why? Because solid black bibs look cool but when crazy detailed toolings are dyed all black, they loose a bit of that detail due to the loss of defining lines and shadows.  The best way to describe Black Antique is it gives the tooling a burnt look, maintaining the dark colors while letting the detail show through.  In direct sunlight, the artwork pops a little more,  showing off areas where the color has been pulled back to look, well…antique, aged.

Here are a few examples of the new Black Antique coloring results on some recent Harley rear fender bibs and a Harley tank bib.  For those interested, the previous post shows these pieces in their raw uncolored state.

Enjoy!

Bare toolings to share

Posted in Fender bibs, Harley Davidson, Honda, Inspiration, leather, Leatherwork, Motorcycles, Tank bib, tank panel, Tooled Leather with tags , , , on March 10, 2014 by Chris Wright

Every so often it is fun to show fender bibs and such that have extensive tooling in their raw state so you good folks can see them before dying.  In their natural state is where you can see the most detail and gives you an even better idea of what I am capable in rendering your hand tooled images.  Today for your consideration are three of the more epic toolings from the last month…enjoy!
