It has been ages since I posted here to the blog, mainly because Facebook and Instagram are so much easier to use.
But it seems a good number of folks keep swinging by to check out Three Mutts Customs so here are a few pics to show what we’ve been up to lately. Of course hand tooled fender bibs, tank bibs and custom bags are still our specialty but now we’re matching to the popular seats more closely.  Mustang distressed brown material is in stock, a new relationship with LePera allows us access to ALL of their materials and Corbin matching material is possible now too!

Custom embroidery in house! An inexpensive way to apply full color designs to your custom bib.

Brown tank bibs material matched to Mustang seats, both in plain and diamond stitch!

More Chaos Pebbles with the new full body and Split Lane designs!

And for those that want to go full tilt for a full custom, there are always hand tooled & airbrushed possibilities.

Laser Engraving, a year later

So last year I mentioned getting a laser engraver and didn’t have many of my own examples (previously farmed out the engraving part to another shop), a year later that has all changed.  I’m rocking the laser most days of the week now, either for full designs, as accents to hand tooled items.  The laser gives me control over fine text and accents that no one can touch by hand and it provides a highly accurate tool for exacting logo reproductions when needed.  Obviously I still hand tool much of my work and enjoy it that way but sometimes the laser is the way to go.  Here is an updated gallery of pieces engraved with my Full Spectrum Laser. – Chris

New artwork option – Laser Engraving!

I’ve been working on a few different options for custom fender bib and tank bib artwork to compliment hand tooled designs for the last year. After researching what is possible, what looks best and performs under the sometimes brutal conditions motorcycle leather can go through I added custom embroidery to the line up late last year.  Embroidery gave folks another option for affordable, full color designs but there was still a gap in the line up.  I wanted another line, one that could provide in stock or fast ship inventory at a great price and still be somewhat customizable.  I was also trying to figure out a way to provide bibs with the possibility of tiny detail, to the level that hand tooling and embroidery couldn’t achieve with prefect clarity.

After long consideration, I’m adding LASER ENGRAVING to the available options for adding designs to your custom leather fender bibs and tank bibs!

Laser engraving is a great addition to our offerings, the detail possible is insanely small and it has a similar appearance to hand tooled artwork for flat two dimensional and line art designs.  It will also allow us to now personalize items like the wallet chain and key chain fobs like never berfore.

Here are a few examples of pieces a few clients have been brave enough to let me experiment with to dial in the process, enjoy!

Coordinating and matching motorcycle leathers

Hey folks, Happy St. Patty’s Day!

I wanted to touch on matching and coordinating custom tank and fender bibs with your existing theme, color scheme or factory gear.  Now, having your gear match isn’t a necessity especially if function is your goal but if you are looking for a clean look to show off at Bike Night and such, coordination can make or break your look.

There are a ton of materials out there but in general there are a fixed number of suppliers so getting a good match or a close match for a tank bib or fender bib is usually possible.  Bigger companies like Harley will subcontract their materials so they are exclusive but close alternatives can be had if you know where to look. Matching another custom maker is also possible when good pictures and references are provided.

This post is picture heavy but I wanted to give you good folks some inspiration for your own matched sets and to show what is possible. None of these bikes were local so everything was done via pictures, emails and most importantly…good communication!

Enjoy!

New Article – How to make a rear fender bib

Posted in Fender bibs, How to Make, Magazine Articles, Road King, Slim, Softail, Sportster, StreetGlide with tags , , , , , , on January 22, 2014 by Chris Wright

My latest article for the Leather Crafters and Saddlers Journal is in print now, “How to make a rear fender bib” appears in the Jan/Feb 2014 issue of the Journal.  The article covers everything from pattern making, layout suggestions, how to protect the fender during the work, wet forming, lacing and a free pattern for 1997-current Road King/StreetGlide fender bibs.

This issue also has a number of other worthwhile articles and is the kick-off issue that will feature a new section, “Urban Leather” featuring article that focus more on the motorcycle and rock & roll scenes!  To get a copy of this issue for yourself, visit their online store here:

new fender bib in inventory…

Posted in Blackline, Fender bibs, Harley Davidson, Harley Davidson Sportster, Slim, Softail, Sportster, Three Mutts Customs with tags , , , , , , , , , , on October 11, 2013 by Chris Wright

Here is a new one for immediate sale in the Etsy shop folks, made one of these for a 2013 Harley Sportster 48 not too long ago and liked the look enough that I made up another one.  It was made to fit the single seat bolt Harley Sportster and Softtail models including the Blackline and Slim. Will not fit Deluxe, Duece models with two bolt seat bracket.

Custom two tone rear fender bib in Saddle Tan and Antique Brown with Coyote Tan stitching. Smooth burnished edges & medium brown felt underside complete the color theme.

The bib is approximately 3 1/2″ wide x 14 1/2″ long. Bolt holes are 11 1/4″ apart on center.  Seat side hole is slightly oblong to allow for small adjustments.

The second photo shows similarly constructed bib mounted on a 2011 Harley Blackline.
