Honda VTX and Aero 7 50 whaletail tank bibs

As promised in a previous post, I’ve come back with more info on whaletail tank bibs. If you’ve emailed me anytime since December 2013 or checked the forums, you already know that I stopped maknig them that winter.  The good news is, late last year a fellow VTX rider came and asked if I would instruct him on making his own. Jeff made his first whaletail using my pattern and tips and was hooked.  After six months of working on whaletail tank bibs for the VTX1300, he is now expanding and making them for sale for the whole VTX 1300/1800 line and the ’04-’09 Honda Aero 750.  His website: shows the current models and he has the rest being shipped to him in the next week or so.  Contact info is on his website or you can email him at: Cheers, Chris

Summer 2013 Featured Client Bike

Catching up a bit on this feature as I had to skip ahead on the featured bike selections, for this quarterly edition the client was looking for a familiar theme with his own twist.  The gamble paid off nicely especially when all of the elements came together.

Orv started with his classically styled 2005 Honda VTX1300R and had the guys over at C&C Motorcycle Seats recover his factory saddle in crocodile embossed cowhide.  For those that don’t know, cowhide can be embossed in pretty much any exotic animal pattern for a fraction of the price and usually feels & wears better when used on seats. (true Croc back armor is not a comfortable seat top!)

After having the seat for a bit, Orv realized that by itself it looked good but there was no theme behind it and gave me a call.  We went through some previous projects and decided on a flarecut tank bib and a bullet shape rear fender bib, both with a real Caiman (So. American Alligator) inlay.  To change things up, Orv requested the tail on the tank bib and the back on the fender bib with the tail plates forming a V going forward.  I must have asked him if he was sure 4 or 5 times as I couldn’t envision this working as well as a traditional layout but went with his wishes to the best of my abilities. To add even more eye candy to the leather, we added a border of Chaos Pebbles to the tank bib. The result is a pretty slick looking, original pattern for the three pieces that blend perfectly!

August was a fun month for custom rear fender bibs and custom tank straps & bibs. Had a few Harley and Honda projects come through each with a slightly different combination of options that kept the shop work interesting.  Hand tooled artwork, hand painted designs and some custom embroidery were in there and to top it off I shipped to some new international locations as well as some previous ones including; Great Britain, Canada, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland and Australia.

Without further adieu, here are the pics…

I have a bunch of new custom leather project & bike pics to share this week but some of them need their own post or a themed post so I’ll just start with a couple of recent custom rear fender bibs I made for two Harleys and a Honda…enjoy!

A few weeks ago I announced that I now have access to an embroidery company that can make custom embroidered leather pieces that can be used as awesome full color inlays.  The first pics back were the Harley FXDi35 rear fender pics that I posted here.  Now, the second project owner has shared pics of their new leather installed as well.  This was an image of a tribal-ish white Black Widow that she found and inquired about.  We decided to edge the inlay with red applique braiding to give it some more pop and add some color to the all black VTX1300.  Notice the theme matching footpegs, nice touch!

Time sure does get away from you when you’re busy, doesn’t it?  It’s been almost 2 1/2 months since my last confession blog update. So rather than overwhelm all four of you that read my blog, I’ll break it down into a couple of posts including the long overdue Summer Showcase Project.  I’m also doing some housekeeping of old/outdated/irrelevant posts.  Let’s get things rolling with a few pictures of recent jobs, shall we?

  • 2002 VTX1800R whaletail tank bib with VTX Knight/1800 tooling & chrome spots

Client pics update #2

Here are some of the other recent project pics from the last month including a revisit to one of my most viewed colored toolings, the USN Pin-up.

The first three below are progress shots of a bib I’m currently working on but they show the detail nicely so it’s a good time to share.  The question of Western style Sheridan scroll work tooling on a tank bib has come up before but I have yet to have a client actually follow through with it until now.  Now, Sheridan style takes a good deal of patience and practice to design and since I haven’t focused on it as a standard medium myself, I called on a friend of mine over at  King’s X Custom Leather ( for the patternwork and man, did he deliver!

This next pair is of the new “Slimline” style of tuxedo tank bibs I’m now doing.  The main difference is the lack of wrap around the speedo area.  These will be added to the website shortly and priced slightly under the standard tuxedo bibs.

Here’s a standard whaletail tank bib for a 2005 VTX1800N.  The client was also thoughtful enough to send a pic of the upper dash area once it’s installed.  Good idea, since 99.9% of the pics I have are from the sides or backend…now you can see what goes on in the front.

Next up on the left is a 2005 VTX1800R whaletail tank bib with decorative buckstitch lacing.

On the left, you might recognize the tooling from the Aero750 tank bib I did early last year (pic of the tooling detail of the bib & detail on the far right). Unfortunately the bike it was on is no longer with us but the client saved the bib just in case. Well, last month he called up and asked that I cut it up and sew it on as a back patch for his new vest. I’d say it works pretty well and one regional bike magazine already shot a pic for their gallery last Memorial Day.
