How about some color?!

One of my specialties is airbrushed and hand painted custom tank bibs and fender bibs.
Eagles, Pin-Ups, and Sugar Skulls are just a few of my recent full color subjects. What some folks don’t realize is these are hand tooled first and then painted. This enhances the highlights, shadows and depth of the final piece. Granted, the process isn’t cheap but the end result is unlike most custom bibs, for Harleys or any other bike you’ll find out there.

here are a couple of pics of my most recent custom painted tank and fender bibs for Harley motorcycles.  Enjoy!

Recent whaletail and pin-up bibs

It’s been a busy couple of weeks for me but here are a couple of recent additions to the Three Mutts bib portfolio.  Both feature new additions to the line up of offerings, the first is full color artwork – specifically hand painted tooling.

The pin-up bib was quite a project, not only tooling a pinup too look good but to then research the best paints to use for lightfastness and adhesion and that provided a vibrant myriad of colors.  Golden Fluid Acrylics were the paint of choice and it was a good one, they are awesome paints to use!  For those curious about mixing skin tones (there is no good “skin tone colored paint” that you can buy, skin tones vary and must be mixed to be accurate…I’m still learning) check out this article: http://www.paint-sculpt.com/tutorials/skintone_pallet/skintone-pallet-page-1.html  The artwork for the pin-up is a rendition of Billy Tucci’s Anchors Away.

The second addition to the line-up is I can now make the ’05-07 VTX1800 R, S & T whaletail bibs.  As it would turn out, the 2006 N1 tank and dash are the same used on the other models.  I had the tank and picked up the dash cover from Honda.  The whaletail bib pictured below is shown with the optional double row buckstitching and the tooled strap was a client request to hold his cell phone.  12 gauge shell cap conchos are mounted on the ends of the strap.  The bike is a 2006 VTX1800T1.

It’s been a little while since my last post so I thought I would share what’s been keeping me so busy.  A couple more tank bibs have/are passing through the shop and with each one, folks have been issuing new challenges to take them to the next level.  Without further adieu, here they are:

New tank bibs and such

From my lack of posts it should be obvious I’ve been pretty busy. I last showed the pattern making process which was to be the template for the new 2005-2008 VTX1800C & F tank bibs. Since then I have finished that bib along with two others that I’ll share after the jump. I also recently acquired a tank & dash for the VTX1300 so I’ll be making those bibs soon as well.

Burgundy dye color recipe

Posted in color mixing, Honda Shadow Aero 750, Leatherwork, Motorcycles, Three Mutts Customs, Three Mutts website with tags , , , , , , on December 4, 2010 by Chris Wright

I need a custom dye color mixed for a bib job I’m working on. A Burgundy/ Wine color per the client’s request to match the two tone paint on his bike, black & burgundy. I wanted a true color instead of using a trick like brown antique over red as true burgundy has a hint of blue and yellow per my color charts. So, after some research and mix testing, here it is. Unfortunately, Fiebing doesn’t make some of the colors needed so Eco-Flow was used.

18 parts Scarlet Red
10 parts Evening Blue
4 parts Sunshine Yellow

If you want/need a little darker, add 1-2 parts of Coal Black until you have the shade you want.

I used a liquid medicine measuring syringe from the local drugstore (cost about $3) to do the measurements in CCs. Makes about 4-5 tsp or dye, which a quite a bit when airbrushing it on. Computers don’t show color differences that well, but there are a few sample shots after the jump.  Continue reading
