It has been ages since I posted here to the blog, mainly because Facebook and Instagram are so much easier to use.
But it seems a good number of folks keep swinging by to check out Three Mutts Customs so here are a few pics to show what we’ve been up to lately. Of course hand tooled fender bibs, tank bibs and custom bags are still our specialty but now we’re matching to the popular seats more closely.  Mustang distressed brown material is in stock, a new relationship with LePera allows us access to ALL of their materials and Corbin matching material is possible now too!

Custom embroidery in house! An inexpensive way to apply full color designs to your custom bib.

Brown tank bibs material matched to Mustang seats, both in plain and diamond stitch!

More Chaos Pebbles with the new full body and Split Lane designs!

And for those that want to go full tilt for a full custom, there are always hand tooled & airbrushed possibilities.

Doing it right in Switzerland…Custom Harley Softail Slim

A recurring client and now friend of mine in Switzerland came to me originally early this year for a custom leather tank bib to match his custom seat from a shop in New York.
This seat is something I had never seen before but I quickly recognized the color as saddle tan, a common color in horse saddles.  By itself, the seat looked lonely, a bit out of place with it’s bright golden tan color on a black bike.  We discussed the bib some and he decided to stick with the same shape as the factory bib but wanted his highly detailed family emblem on it.  Using a combination of laser engraving and hand tooling, I was able to recreate it in exacting detail, including the text on the banner.  Thick, white hand stitched edges were required to match the seat so I set to work.  Together they looked great but the backend needed something so Umberto sent another email, asking about a custom roll style bag to fit between his custom seat and custom fender.  I have to wonder how many parts on his Softail Slim are factory besides the engine and frame.  We agreed on a smallish, 4″ diameter x 10″ long back that would strap to the frame between the two parts with the buckles reversed so they wouldn’t touch the fender when the bag was opened.  His racing number was hand tooled on the flap and the crest laser engraved on the side caps to tie it all together.  Here are the pics, enjoy!

Something a bit different…knife sheath!

A friend at work brought in this behemoth of a blade, a Busse prototype Bowie, and asked about a sheath for it.  Formidable in size with a 5/16″ thick, 10″ long dual curve blade it made for a fun diversion from my standard offerings.  I decided on a hybrid of a standard folded sheath with a 3/4 welted and stitched design to best fit the thickness of the blade while showing off the curves at the same time.  Made from 6oz drum dyed (dyed all the way through) Black cowhide with black stitching and a nickel Sam Browne button for the cross over closure.  The belt loop extends all the way up so the handle rests just below the belt line to allow for easier access and full withdrawal without tilting the sheath.

Had such a good time making this one, custom knife sheathes are being added to the product line for anyone interested.  Black, brown, custom colors, etc. will all be available upon request.

I finally finished getting all the parts, the design and samples made for the new belt straps.  Two different versions with a number of options are available in the Etsy shop for immediate purchase.  These belt loops are made from a single piece of thick 6 oz Herman Oak leather and drum dyed all the way through in either black or brown.  You can choose from a keychain ring or a large claw clasp to keep your gear close at hand.  There are currently 12 decorative snap heads to choose from including military, Harley Davidson half skull and others.

I also have a couples of overstock rear fender bibs in the shop ready to ship and will be adding more soon.

Two of a kind #2 – Matching to Paint

Posted in brown, custom work, Fender bibs, Harley Davidson, leather, Motorcycles, Three Mutts Customs with tags , , , , , , , , , on May 23, 2013 by Chris Wright

Here is the second part of what is quickly becoming a design thoughts series, Two of a kind.  Having a common theme and sometimes straight out matching designs is fairly in the motorcycle world.  This can be simply matching textures like in the first installment (https://3mutts.wordpress.com/2013/04/23/two-of-a-kind-matching-to-seats/) or it can go further like this week’s match up: leather to paint.

For this one I have a sweet project to show, the request was for a rear fender bib for a 2008 Harley Dyna Street Bob with tooling similar to the Tribal Punisher whaletail tank bib I did earlier this year only with the WillyG skull.  In looking at pics of the bike, I suggested also replacing the tribal background with one that would match the tribal style in the paint job.  While I haven’t made the bib yet, I thought it would be good for you readers to see how the design part came together.

First, a pic of the bike…nice looking ride!

Harley rear fender bib pin-up

labor of lust: pin-up rear fender bibsHad a fun project this last week that I thought would be cool to share some of the work in progress pics. Tony hit me up last month looking for a rear fender bib for his 1996 Harley Davidson Sportster featuring a Jessica Rabbit style pin-up wearing quite a bit less than we saw her in the movie.  He sent a few pics along with a shot of his existing handlebar bag so I could match the color and background style of the bag.  The following is a sequence from pattern to finished piece and a few steps in between.  I’m actually thinking that next month when the shop is closed for Babycation I may go back and do another one and take a few more pictures of the process including the dying/airbrushing stages to “flesh” those out a bit more for you.

Enjoy!
